The Rapid Action Force (RAF) is a specialized unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) that was raised in October 1992 to deal with riots and other public disturbances. It is a zero-response force that can be deployed to crisis situations within a minimal time, instilling confidence, and security among the general public.
The RAF has a separate flag that signifies peace, and it was awarded the President's Colour on 7th October 2003 by Shri L.K. Advani, the then Deputy Prime Minister of India for its selfless service to the nation. The RAF also trains male and female contingents for UN peacekeeping missions, where they have earned accolades for their professionalism.

The smallest functional unit in the RAF is a team led by an Inspector. Each team has three components: a riot control element, a tear smoke element, and a fire element. Teams are organized as independent striking units.
One team in each RAF company is made up of women personnel to deal more effectively with situations involving women demonstrators.
